Speakers, tweeters, subs, surround sound, 5.1, 2, 4.0, what does it all mean, where to start, what to do, and where to go!  Buying a new speaker can be daunting, and figuring out exactly what you need can waste time and encourage frustration!  So let us take a look at subwoofers and see what they are used for and if you need one!

You know that trembling sound that rumbles the seats at the movie theater? That is a subwoofer.  That low bass sound comes from a big speaker that vibrates relatively slowly; it gives you those low lows that can literally stop your heart.  Subwoofers can be put to good use as entertainment system devices, computer sound amplifiers and car blasting tunes.

A 15″ subwoofer is the most common size that is put in a music lover’s vehicle.  Not only does that provide a suitable amount of low sound, the actual bass speaker is still not too big to hide away in the trunk.  Usually you will find a 15 inch subwoofer tucked away in a custom-built box near the corner of a trunk.  That is what adds the rattle, that deep thud to a vehicles reputation.  It does not matter if it is a compact car or mammoth hummer, the subs always provide the bass and the 15″ is the standard, though having multiples are the preference.

Some brands to look at are Kenwood and BOSS, both well known and both always put out the quality sound a person wants when they put in that bass speaker.  The BOSS CH153DVC is a quality sub for under a hundred bucks and can get you kicking, though if you do not know how to install it you will have to have someone to do it for you.  Most places have local speaker shops and even some of your corporate buddies like Circuit City sells and install subs.  Do not forget a subwoofer amplifier like the JL AUDIO 250/1 if you want to push out all the power you can.  Amps make sure to provide the sub with the necessary power to keep the beat going.

Computer subwoofers are just as big today as subs for cars.  They give your music that extra depth and true to life tone.  A computer subwoofer speaker is usually a lower cost and comes with the surround sound sets.  Major brands are Klipsch, Logitec and BOSS.  It is all preference and it depends on what you want to spend, look at what each set has to offer and see if it fits your needs!
