Adding a computer subwoofer to your computer system will provide you with sound quality that rivals a home theater system. In order to choose the correct subwoofer consider these factors: the type of computer system, the range in which the sound needs to carry, and how much money is within your budget.
The type of computer system in which this subwoofer will be attached does matter. For instance, if your computer is a laptop you can are limited to some degree in which subwoofers you could purchase. Subwoofers for the most part come in a set with two computer speakers. In order to use these speakers you are required to plug in a USB cord as well as an audio cord that is set up like the traditional plug ins for a stereo system. If you have a laptop you may not have this outlet on your computer system. Most tower and desktop computer models, however, do have this port for computer speakers.
The range in which the sound needs to carry greatly depends on the size of the room and the intended use of the computer speakers. Yes, the subwoofer will enhance sound and increase the volume of media played on the computer such as movies and videos. But if this sound needs to travel a great distance you need speakers that will accomplish the task. For instance, if you rent movies online and want to use your flat screen TV for a monitor the sound will not come through your TV speakers but through your computer speakers. If your living room is roughly fourteen feet by fourteen feet the Altec Lansing BXR1221 three piece speaker set would allow you to hear your movie from across the room. This model is priced at $20.89 as of 2010 and you could purchase it at Wal-Mart or any other major retailer. If you have a larger living room you may consider purchasing the Logitech Z 2300 2.1-CH Speaker set. This model like the Altec model is packaged with two speakers and one subwoofer. The price for this set ranges from $102 to $148 depending on the retailer from which you make the purchase. This Logitech model provides more of a stereo sound, much like a home theater.
Your budget, of course, determines which model you choose. With that in mind you have several options. For instance for a living space that is just a little larger than fourteen feet by fourteen feet, consider the Altec Lansing VS2521 PC speakers with subwoofer. These speakers will provide more sound range than the BXR1221 model and are only $59.99. Another moderately priced set is the Cyber Acoustics CA 3001 which is about $30.
